Summary

Ting has no advertising. An account is optional. If you create one, we keep your name, your email address and your learning progress so that your progress survives a new phone. Ting also sends usage statistics — which screens and clips people use — so we can see what helps people learn; you can turn this off in Profile.

Four services are involved, each described below: Supabase, which runs accounts and serves the lesson list; PostHog, which receives the usage statistics; YouTube, which plays the videos; and, if you choose them, Apple or Google for signing in.

If you create an account

We collect:

This is used only to run your account and restore your progress on another device. It is stored with Supabase (our database provider), is readable only by you when signed in, and is never sold, shared with advertisers, or used to track you.

Your password, if you use one, is stored by Supabase as a salted hash; we never see it. Your sign-in session is kept in your iPhone's Keychain.

Deleting your account

Profile → Delete account deletes your account and all progress stored with it from our servers, immediately. Progress on your phone stays until you delete the app.

If you don't create an account

No name or email is collected. Your progress is saved on your device only, using Apple's standard on-device storage, and deleting the app removes it.

Usage statistics

To learn which parts of Ting work, the app sends PostHog (our analytics provider, in the United States) a record of what happens in it: which onboarding screens were shown and the answers given there (such as your level and daily goal), when the app is opened, which clips were watched and for how long, which words were looked up, flashcard reviews, and your streak. Each record carries the app version, iOS version and a random ID created on your phone. If you are signed in, that ID is your account ID, so we can tell that two phones belong to one learner.

These records contain no name, email address, contacts, location or advertising identifier, and nothing from the YouTube player. They are used only to improve Ting, never for advertising, and are not sold or shared.

To stop them, turn off Profile → Share usage statistics. To have the statistics linked to you deleted, email us from the address below.

PostHog's handling of data is governed by the PostHog Privacy Policy.

What the app stores on your device

Lesson content

The list of lessons is fetched from our database on Supabase when the app opens. That request carries no information about you. Supabase receives the IP address and time of each request, as any web server would. A complete copy of the lessons also ships inside the app, so it works offline.

Supabase's handling of data is governed by the Supabase Privacy Policy.

Signing in with Apple or Google

If you choose Sign in with Apple, Apple shares your name (the first time only) and your email or a private relay address with us. If you choose Continue with Google, you sign in on Google's own page and Google shares your name and email address with us. We receive nothing else from either.

Video lessons and YouTube

Video lessons play through YouTube's embedded player. When one plays, your device connects to Google's servers, and Google may receive your IP address, device and browser information, and data about the video watched. This is Google's collection, not ours. We use youtube-nocookie.com, YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode, and send Google nothing about you.

Google's handling of this data is governed by the Google Privacy Policy.

Reminders

If you ask for a daily reminder, it is scheduled on your phone as a local notification, as is one reminder an hour after your first session. Nothing is sent to a server to deliver them.

Speech synthesis

Pronunciation audio is generated on your device by Apple's speech synthesis.

Subscriptions

Ting Pro is bought through the App Store. Apple handles the payment; we never see your card or payment details. The app checks with the App Store, on your phone, whether you have an active subscription, and records in the usage statistics which plan was chosen and when a trial or subscription started.

Tracking

We do not track you across apps or websites, and we do not share data with data brokers or advertisers.

Children's privacy

Ting is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly create accounts for them. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will delete it.

Changes

Updates will be published here with a revised date above.
